What is personal protective equipment?

Personal protective equipment, commonly referred to as "PPE", is equipment worn to minimize exposure to hazards that cause serious workplace injuries and illnesses.

Eye Protection

Eye protection is achieved by wearing eyewear specifically designed to reduce the risk of exposure to chemical splashes, laser radiation and/or flying debris.

Face Protection

Face shields are required where facial skin protection is needed. They can only be used in conjunction with eye protection.

Hand Protection

Protective equipment includes gloves, finger guards and arm coverings.

Body Protection

Examples of body protection include coveralls, splash suits, aprons, jackets, vests, lab coats and surgical gowns, and full-body suits.

Respiratory Protection

Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) is a particular type of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), used to protect the individual wearer against the inhalation of hazardous substances in the workplace air.

Hearing Protection

Hearing protectors are required to prevent noise induced hearing loss. Hearing protection devices reduce the noise energy reaching and causing damage to the inner ear. Ear muffs and earplugs are the most common types of PPE.
